Glucosamine Is the Almost-Perfect Remedy for Osteoarthritis

Glucosamine is for good reason one of the most popular natural supplements for joint care. Using glucosamine successfully, however, requires following a few key concepts.

  • Glucosamine works best when it is taken in the form of glucosamine sulfate. This is the form of the protein that the body uses to make the glycosaminoglycans that form protective tissues to cushion the joints.
  • Glucosamine sulfate works even better if you also take chondroitin sulfate.
  • Typically, glucosamine is something used in you, not on you. The only form of glucosamine that makes a difference if it is rubbed on the skin over an affected joint is N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, also known as NAG.
  • A typical glucosamine dosage is 1,500 mg per day. Another 500 to 1,000 mg a day may be helpful if you are also taking chondroitin. If you have diabetes, be sure to monitor your blood sugar levels and to reduce your dosage if glucosamine seems to be making your blood sugars go up.
